Basic and Advanced Online Nurse Practitioner Programs

Online nurse practitioner programs will require a student to have certification as an RN, prior to applying for enrollment. It’s fairly common for online nurse practitioner programs to include a hands on clinical rotation at a local medical facility, in order for a student to qualify for graduation.  These online degree programs are designed to fulfill the requirements of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in the nursing field. Many states will require that a student earn a master’s degree after obtaining a degree in nursing, in order to practice as a nurse practitioner.

How Online NP Programs Work

Many of the online classes will not have residency requirements or on-campus meeting requirements. The curriculum in these programs will typically be taught by the same program instructors as the on-campus programs. A student that completes online classes will have unlimited access to the classwork via a web based learning system, such as blackboard. It’s typical for NP students to be required to complete a supervised internship at a local healthcare facility, in order to graduate from a program.

The classes within an NP program can also be offered as a blended, which means a student can take some classes online and be required to attend campus for other classes.

A student can expect to complete classes in differential research and diagnosis for advanced nursing practice, cultural and family statistics, advanced women’s health, primary care and reproductive dynamics.

The basic masters of Science degree in nursing program requires students to participate in a specific number of residencies on the school’s campus, which is typically broken into three rounds, with the first at the beginning of a program, another halfway through the program and the last round taking place during the final semester. The didactic portion of an online program is taught through various internet technologies. A student can learn course material by listening to audio files or streaming live lectures. A student will take classes in nursing research, forces in healthcare and nursing theory. The specialties in a program will often include women’s health, family medicine and pediatrics.

Advanced NP Programs: How to Qualify for Doctoral Programs

Doctor of nursing programs will require the program applicant to have completed the master’s degree in nursing program in order to be eligible for enrollment. Additionally, many of these programs will require the potential student to have a number of years of professional field experience. Students that are enrolled in online doctoral programs can often choose to full or part-time programs. The classwork is delivered to students through web-based class management systems which will employ video conferencing software and similar synchronous technologies.

The specialty areas in this program can include pediatric, adult and family medicine. A student is typically qualified to obtain certification as an NP after they have completed the classwork in one of these areas of concentration. The program can take three to six years to complete, depending on whether a student is enrolled on a full or part-time basis.

Doctoral programs will also have clinical rotation requirements that need to be met before being eligible for graduation.
